Orthodox Views on the Torah

Orthodox Views on the Torah

The revelatory experience at Sinai is considered by Jews as the seminal event in the history of the Jewish people.

The Bible shows God as having established a relationship with the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but Sinai solidified the relationship between God and Israel.

The classical Jewish understanding of Matan Torah(the giving of the Torah) as reflected in the Bible and in rabbinic literature, is that Sinai represents the central revelatory experience by God to the Jewish people.

This experience was and remains the highest form of prophetic revelation in history because it was transparent, audible, and occurred to a minimum of 600,000 male adults.

While the significance and awe of later prophetic revelation is clear, it in contrast usually occurred via dreams or visions to individuals. Later authorship of the hagiographical literature in the Bible occurred via the inspiration of ruach hakodesh (the holy spirit).

The uniqueness of Sinaitic revelation establishes the divine authorship of the dual Torah and consequently rabbinic exegesis thereafter. The Pirke Avot’s (Sayings of the Fathers) initial verse “Moses received the Torah from Sinai and transmitted to Joshua; Joshua to the Elders…etc.” is the foundation of traditional Jewish orthodoxy on the matter.

The theological justification then for the view that “Torah” or the Covenant at Sinai represented the highest view of revelation and subsequently authority in Jewish religious life stems from unequaled manner in which the transmission took place.

The nature of the Torah lends it self to a level of authority expected to transcend the generations. Exodus 12:14 provides us with one example: “…throughout your generations you shall observe it [Pesach] as an ordinance for ever.”

The classical orthodox Jewish position also views the term “Torah” as quite an inclusive term. The actual miraculous revelation at Sinai which resulted in the reception of a Written Law (i.e. Torah She Biktav) is at the heart of the revelation at Sinai, but it also includes the expository directives and methodology for adapting and developing Jewish law known as the Oral Law (Torah She’Ba’al Peh).

The term is inclusive of the entire Hebrew Bible and all subsequent rabbinic applications, decisions, and understanding to the present day.

For Traditional Judaism then, revelation and thus Torah are as Louis Jacobs notes, static. That is, the Torah remains the same throughout the generations. Jews are therefore according to the traditional view obligated to observe it as an infallible guide to life.

That position is articulated in the medieval period in by the great Jewish rabbi Maimonides’ Thirteen Principles, and the hymn Yigdal where it states: ” God gave his people a Torah of Truth by means of his prophet the most trusted of his household. God will never amend nor exchange His law for any other one, for all eternity.”

If the Torah cannot be amended, then Halakhah (Jewish Law) can only be derived according to very well prescribed rules. The binding nature of the Torah as reflected by and through the prism of a rabbinic worldview cannot be negotiated.

And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. 1John 4:3-4

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

‘And why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

These were the words of Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist when she was visited by her kinswoman, the Blessed Virgin Mary. And Mary went on to give us those lovely words that many of us miss singing at Evensong: My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. Today the Church encourages us too to greet Mary and welcome her as the Mother of God. From early in our Christian history it was decided that ‘Theotokos’ (Christ Bearer or Mother of God) should be the title of honour of Mary. It was in fact the third Ecumenical Council of the Christian Church at Ephesus in 431 AD which issued that pronouncement, giving form to a long-held belief and practice. It also was in order to counter the heresy which was gaining some credence which stressed the humanity of Jesus at the expense of his divinity.

The Second Vatican Council of the Roman Church, held under Pope John XXIII, reaffirmed the spirit of the Third Ecumenical Council by pronouncing in 1964 the title of ‘Mother of the Church’ as being the most appropriate for Mary. This was to counter the excessive and inappropriate veneration that had developed over the centuries. The Reformers of Europe and England, long before Pope John, had also endeavoured to counter the excesses which had grown in the Roman Church by that time. In Europe generally the break with the past was complete and completely new churches were established. In England the continuity with the early Church and traditional Catholic orthodoxy was maintained with the careful continuation of Apostolic ministry.

Thus the Church of England is able to claim both Catholic and Reformed heritages. She is able to stand as equal with the Roman and Orthodox Churches as truly Catholic in the fullest sense of the word. Unfortunately though in England there were excesses of reforming zeal with Protestant mobs being incited to tear down many of the magnificent treasures of our ancient heritage. Even in this time of chaos though, some managed to keep some sense of balance. They managed, as one can see in the Book of Common Prayer, sometimes in semi-concealed ways, to keep the true faith alive. Thus, some of the festivals of Mary were retained in the Prayer Books of 1549 and 1662.

During the 19th century some people began, initially in Oxford, to look in greater depth at what the Prayer Book actually said. Consequently what had been maintained by High Churchmen through the past centuries began to emerge into the public arena. Again there was violence initiated by the opposition. Indeed it was so great that there were those like John Henry Newman who finally came to believe that the forces of Protestantism were just too strong within Anglicanism and turned to Rome. Many others became discouraged and followed him. The Roman Church in the 19th century gained a great impetus in theology and faith in action from the sheer number of great Christians and great theologians who came from the Church of England, and who by merit rose to positions of prominence in the Roman hierarchy – at least two cardinals for a start.

But enough remained to develop and proclaim the reformed Catholicism that changed the face of worldwide Anglicanism. Once again today though we are under attack from those who wish to bring the world’s values into the Church rather than take the Church’s values into the world. But perhaps enough of history. Why do we respect and honour S. Mary the Virgin as the greatest of the saints? The answer lies in the answer to another question – what makes a Christian? The answer has to be love of God and neighbour which issues in obedience to God’s word and call. The word of God came to Mary through the lips of the angel. Mary’s response was: Be it unto me according to thy word. God’s work is dome through people – God’s work today here will be done through us. The simple conclusion must be that if Mary had refused God then Jesus Christ could not have been born at that time and in that place.

We have our salvation only because Mary loved God and was obedient to the will of her Father God. Mary, as we know from the NT record, maintained that devotion to God throughout her whole life. She accompanied Jesus in much of his ministry. She was at the foot of the cross at the crucifixion. She was committed by Jesus into the care of the Church in the person of John, the Apostle and Evangelist. It is probable that she lived near him, or even in his house, at Ephesus until her death. There is a pious belief, which we celebrate today, that at her death she was taken directly to heaven. This belief has some Biblical basis in Revelation chapter 12. But as this passage, like much of the book of Revelation, is capable of more than one interpretation, the Assumption must remain for Anglicans simply a permissible pious belief.

When the story of Mary is viewed objectively we can see why even many Protestants, as well as Anglicans, are coming to honour and respect Mary. We can see why even a respected Protestant theologian such as Max Thurian can say: Instead of being a cause of division among us, Christian reflection on the role of the Virgin Mary should be cause for rejoicing and a source of prayer. It is both theologically essential and spiritually profitable to consider the vocation of Mary with some freedom. The traditional prayer known as ‘Ave Maria’ goes as follows: Hail Mary full of grace, for the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Most would not have any difficulty so far, but the second half opens up a whole new question: Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

We are now talking about prayer to and for the departed. For me, believing as I do in the Communion of Saints and accepting the word that says we are ‘surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses’, accepting our place in the cosmos, and the cosmic struggle talked about by S. Paul, I have no difficulty in believing in my essential unity with all that is, which therefore makes such communication available to me. At the same time I am an Anglican, which means that I do not try to insist on such beliefs for others. My function is to introduce people to God’s love, and to the great richness and potential of our reformed Catholic heritage – it is then over to the individual believer to decide how much of this richness of belief and expression they wish to claim for their personal worship of God and richness of living.

In Bible versus Quran: Are the Angels Sons of God, Language wise?

In Bible versus Quran: Are the Angels Sons of God, Language wise?

The Sons of the Lord God in Bible versus Quran (3)

This is the third article of the series:” The Sons of the Lord God in Bible versus Quran”.

The Quran says that Allah, the Almighty Creator, has neither a son nor a partner.

—————————————————————————————–

The Sons of the Lord God in the Bible (3)

The Bible says that the Lord God, the Almighty Creator, has SONS who came to present themselves before the LORD.  Also, Satan came with the Sons of God to present himself before the Lord God.

Satan’s tests are many in the Bible; however, the two famous Satan trials occurred with Job and the Lord Jesus. Job was subjected to two trials when Satan Attacks Job’s Health and the Lord Jesus was subjected to the 40 day trial in the wilderness (Read Matthew 4)

It should be emphasized however that when Satan tried the Lord Jesus the Sons of God did not come to present themselves before the LORD.

On the other hand, the Bible does not tell the names of the Sons of the Lord God, the Bible also does not give the physical attributes of the Sons of the Lord God. In addition, the Bible does not tell what the number of the Sons of the Lord God was and how many they were?

In short, the Bible does not let us know who, how, when, where, how many etc. in respect to the Sons of the Lord God.

On the other hand, the Bible gives some informative details about the Sons of the kings of Israel, for example, but does not give any details about the Sons of the Lord God, the Almighty Creator, who are of course very much more important than the Sons of the kings of Judah .

Furthermore, In Language and literally wise, there are differences between the Angels and the Sons of God.  However; a biblical version translates the Hebrew “Sons of God” to Angels!

—————————-

Job 1:6 in five different versions of the Bible:

New International Version

6 One day the Angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.

New American Standard Bible

6Now there was a day when the Sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.

English Standard Version

6Now there was a day when the Sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.

King James Version

6Now there was a day when the Sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

Young’s Literal Translation

6And the day is, that Sons of God come in to station themselves by Jehovah, and there doth come also the Adversary in their midst.

—————————-

Job 2:1 in five different versions of the Bible:

New International Version

1 On another day the Angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them to present himself before him.

New American Standard Bible

1Again there was a day when the Sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD.

English Standard Version

1Again there was a day when the Sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD.

King James Version

1Again there was a day when the Sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.

Young’s Literal Translation

1And the day is, that Sons of God come in to station themselves by Jehovah, and there doth come also the Adversary in their midst to station himself by Jehovah.

The Sons of the Lord God in the Quran (3)

On the other hand, the Quran makes it very clear and says that Allah, the Almighty Creator, has neither a son nor a partner.

The Quran firmly forbids saying that Allah has a son.

It is not befitting for the Majesty of Allah to take to Himself a son.

The Quran says that Allah is the Originator of the heavens and the earth, which He originated uniquely without precedent; how should He have a son, when He has no consort, spouse?

Say O Prophet Muhammad: ‘if Allah had a son, I would be the first to worship of that son.  But it is established that He, exalted be He, does not have a son and thus there can be no worshipping of such a son.  I am the first to acknowledge that Allah has no son or partner.

In Islam, this point is very important faith wise.

In a very simple word, Allah, the Almighty Creator, has neither a son nor a partner.

Again, it is unforgivable sin to say or to believe that The One Almighty Creator who is Allah or God or the Lord or Jehovah or whatever you name Him has a son or Sons.

From the Islamic point of view, the conclusion of this essential topic that may establish or destroy the faith is that:

Any one who believe that the Almighty Creator has a son or Sons; he messes his faith up and is considered as a disbeliever and in the afterlife he will end up as an eternal inhabitant of the hell.

Any one who believes that the Creator has neither a son nor a partner he has a good faith and is considered as a believer and in the afterlife he will end up as an eternal inhabitant of the paradise.

—————————-

The meaning of Verse 6:101:

Allah is the Originator of the heavens and the earth, which He originated uniquely without precedent; He created them when they were nothing before such creation.

How should He have a son, when He has no consort, spouse?

How can He have a child, when there is for Him no consort, no wife?

And He created everything, that was meant to be created, and He has knowledge of all things; He is Aware of all created beings.

The meaning of Verse 43:81-82

Say O Prophet Muhammad: ‘if Allah had a son, I would be the first to worship of that son.

‘If Allah, the merciful, the Compassionate One, the Beneficent One had a son, hypothetically speaking, I would have been first among the worshippers, of that son.

But it is established that He, exalted be He, does not have a son and thus there can be no worshipping of such a son.  I am the first to acknowledge that Allah has no son or partner.

Glorified be the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Throne, from that which they ascribe unto Him of Sons and partners!

—————————-

Verse 6:101 of the Noble Quran in four different translations:

QARIB:

He is the creator of the heavens and the earth. How can he have a son when he had no female companion? He created all things and has knowledge of all things.

SHAKIR:

Wonderful originator of the heavens and the earth! How could he have a son when he has no consort, and he (himself) created everything, and he is the knower of all things

PICKTHAL:

The originator of the heavens and the earth! How can he have a child, when there is for him no consort, when he created all things and is aware of all things?

YUSUFALI:

To him is due the primal origin of the heavens and the earth: how can he have a son when he hath no consort? he created all things, and he hath full knowledge of all things.

—————————-

Verse 43:81-82

Verse 43:81

QARIB:

Say (Prophet Muhammad): ‘if the merciful had a son, I would be the first of the worshipers.

SHAKIR:

Say: if the beneficent Allah has a son, I am the foremost of those who serve

PICKTHAL:

Say (o Muhammad): if the beneficent one hath a son, then, I shall be first among the worshippers. (But there is no son).

YUSUFALI:

Say: “if (Allah) most gracious had a son, I would be the first to worship.”

Verse 43:82

QARIB:

Exaltations be to the lord of the heavens and the earth, the lord of the throne, above that which they describe! ‘

SHAKIR:

Glory to the lord of the heavens and the earth, the lord of power, from what they describe

PICKTHAL:

Glorified be the lord of the heavens and the earth, the lord of the throne, from that which they ascribe (unto him)!

YUSUFALI:

Glory to the lord of the heavens and the earth, the lord of the throne (of authority)! (He is free) from the things they attribute (to him)!
